Sebastian Eichelsbacher, PhD student at the Chair of Digital Agriculture working on our indoor wheat research, gave a talk on 21 April 2026 at the 12th HEFagrar PhD Symposium in Freising.
In his presentation entitled: “LEDs, no soil, just hydroponics: reinventing wheat yield and quality in vertical farms”, Sebastian Eichelsbacher demonstrated that LED-based, hydroponic wheat cultivation in vertical farming enables very high yields and good to better baking quality than in open-field cultivation. However, despite precise climate control, challenges remain due to high energy requirements and plant physiological issues that require further research.
This was followed by an engaging discussion with the PhD students from the TUM School of Life Sciences who were attending the symposium.
