Career
Sabine Wittmann completed her bachelor's degree in horticulture at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) and graduated with distinction from the Technical University of Munich with a master's degree in horticultural management in 2020. Both courses were supported by a scholarship from the Stiftung Begabtenförderung Berufliche Bildung. As part of her studies, she took part in a Plant Factory Tour in Taiwan and Japan.
From 2018 to 2025, she worked in the “Applied Science Centre for Smart Indoor Farming” working group at HSWT, where she was involved in various research projects on energy efficiency through lighting strategies and plant physiological optimization in indoor farming systems.
As part of her doctorate, she is investigating the optimization of plant raw material production in closed, multi-layer indoor farming systems. The focus is on the cultivation of so-called “higher value plants”. The aim is to identify and harness efficiency potential by analyzing productivity and resource consumption. Using wheat as an example, she is currently researching energy consumption in vertical farming systems and developing strategies to reduce energy use through the targeted adaptation of light regimes.
