Environmental and economic assessment of design for recycling in wood building construction
Objectives of the project are to establish the concept of Design for Recycling in timber construction, to develop new concepts for the reuse and circulation of wood by implementing a cascade use; creating evaluation systems to allow grading for recovered wood and determining the ecological and economical effects of design for recycling schemes. To deal with the rising demand for wood as a raw material and the requirements of a sustainable forestry, resource efficiency must be increased by a circular economy. In order to reduce the deconstruction effort and maximize yield, buildings must therefore be constructed following the concept of design for recycling.
The main task of the Chair of Wood Science is to determine the ecological and economical aspects of the new constructions and compare these to state of the art building concepts. The national project is conducted in cooperation with the Architectural office Hariolf Brenner (Ellwangen).
The project is part of an European consortium with partners form Sweden, Slovenia, Spain, Scotland and Finland.
