Objectives of the project are to analyze the effects of possible shifts between the material and the energetic utilization of wood, the evaluation of probable ecological, social and economic consequences generated by these shifts, and the development of adaptation strategies for the cluster forest and wood in Bavaria. Through the application of advanced assessment tools, new pathways for the sustainable production and utilization of wood in the next 30 years will be identified. The results contribute to a decision support system aimed at forest practitioners and policy makers. On the basis of the existing cluster studies and wood flow analysis, balances of ecological, social and economic indicators of the current wood flows in Bavaria will be elaborated. Raw wood production and wood flows will be modelled based on shifting future conditions like the demand for energy wood as well as oil and wood prices. Additionally, scenarios for the supply of wood and its distribution will be developed. In order to assess material versus energetic utilization pathways several different variants and their sustainability indicators will be compared.
